Amalgam: the most expensive scale models in the world

14 October 2025 · Modelcar.com

If you think CMC or MR Models are expensive, you have not yet encountered Amalgam Collection. This British brand produces handmade scale models in 1:8, at prices ranging from €2,000 to more than €15,000 per piece. Amalgam occupies an entirely different category and serves an audience that regards the model more as a work of art than as a collector's item.

What is Amalgam Collection?

Amalgam Collection was founded in 1990 in Bristol and works exclusively with official licences from car manufacturers and Formula 1 teams. The models are made entirely by hand from composite materials, wood, leather and metal. A single model requires hundreds of hours of craftsmanship. The dimensions are impressive: a 1:8 Ferrari F40 is nearly 60 centimetres long.

Which models does Amalgam make?

The range focuses on the most iconic cars and Formula 1 machines. Ferrari takes up the largest share, with models of the F40, F50, Enzo, LaFerrari and various F1 championship cars. There are also models of McLaren, Porsche, Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG. Formula 1 collectors know Amalgam from the Red Bull RB series and the Mercedes W series race cars.

Are Amalgam models a good investment?

Amalgam models hold their value well, but are primarily intended as display objects and status symbols rather than investment instruments. The market is small: there are few buyers and few sellers. Sold-out editions of popular models (Ferrari F40 in red, Senna Formula 1 cars) are difficult to find and typically achieve comparable or higher prices on resale than the original purchase price.

Differences from other premium brands

  • Scale: Amalgam works in 1:8, considerably larger than the usual 1:18
  • Materials: composite, leather and metal rather than exclusively resin or diecast
  • Price: €2,000 to €15,000, far above CMC (€300 to €700) and MR Models (€400 to €800)
  • Target audience: car enthusiasts with a large living space and a budget befitting the real car
