Cleaning scale models without causing damage: a step-by-step guide

30 September 2025 · · Modelcar.com

Dust is a scale model collection's greatest enemy. But fingerprints, UV discolouration and moisture can also damage your models. Cleaning incorrectly, however, can cause more harm than the dirt itself. In this article we explain how to clean your models safely, both diecast and resin.

What do you need?

  • A soft brush (size 2 to 4, new and clean)
  • Compressed air or a bulb blower (not an aerosol with chemicals)
  • Microfibre cloths (not cheap ones: they can leave micro-scratches)
  • Distilled water (tap water can leave lime deposits)
  • Isopropyl alcohol 70% (for stubborn stains on glass and metal)

Step 1: remove dust

Use a soft brush to sweep dust out of gaps and corners. Work from top to bottom so that loosened dust falls downward. Then use a bulb blower to blow away remaining particles. Do this over a clean surface or outdoors. Never use kitchen paper: it is too coarse and will scratch the paintwork.

Step 2: fingerprints and greasy marks

Dampen a microfibre cloth lightly with distilled water and dab (do not rub) the mark gently clean. For stubborn grease stains you can use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol 70%. Always test this first on an inconspicuous spot, particularly with resin models whose paintwork is more sensitive.

Resin versus diecast: the differences

Diecast models generally have a harder lacquer and are slightly more robust during cleaning. Resin models (GT Spirit, BBR, MR Models) are more sensitive: the paint can turn dull or flake with aggressive cleaning. For resin: use as little moisture as possible, the softest possible materials, and never use alcohol on decals or printed decorations.

What you should never do

  • Use cleaning products containing acetone, bleach or aggressive solvents
  • Hold models under running water: water can penetrate moving parts and joints
  • Rub with kitchen paper or tissues: too coarse for lacquered surfaces
  • Use ultrasonic cleaners on resin: the vibrations can loosen adhesive joints

Prevention is better than cleaning

The best way to minimise cleaning is proper storage. Closed display cabinets keep out dust, UV-resistant glass protects the paintwork and a constant temperature prevents condensation. Read our storage tips for more information.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean a scale model with water?

Use only distilled water and never tap water: that leaves lime deposits. Never hold the model under a running tap. Dab carefully with a damp microfibre cloth and allow to dry completely afterwards.

Can resin models be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol?

Always test isopropyl alcohol (70%) first on an inconspicuous spot. With resin the paintwork is more sensitive than with diecast. Use it only for stubborn grease stains and never on decals or printed decorations.

How do I remove dust from small gaps?

Use a soft brush (size 2 to 4) for gaps and corners. Blow away remaining dust particles with a bulb blower. Never use kitchen paper or tissues — they are too coarse for lacquered surfaces.
