Ferrari in 1:18 or 1:43: which scale does the serious collector choose?
Ferrari is the most collected car brand in the world and is excellently represented in both popular scales. Whether you choose 1:18 or 1:43 depends on your space, budget, focus (road car or F1) and how you want to display the collection. Both choices have compelling arguments.
Ferrari in 1:18: presence and detail
A Ferrari in 1:18 measures on average 25 centimetres and has the physical presence that makes a model a true centrepiece. The scale allows manufacturers to fully develop the interior, engine and bodywork details. For road cars, 1:18 is the most logical choice: CMC for historical classics, BBR and MR Models for handmade resin, Kyosho and Hot Wheels Elite for more accessible prices. Purchase prices range from €80 (standard diecast) to over €500 (handmade resin or CMC).
Ferrari in 1:43: completeness and F1 history
In 1:43, the Ferrari range is most complete, particularly for Formula 1. Spark, BBR and Looksmart together cover virtually the entire Ferrari F1 catalogue from the 1950s to the present. For those who want to build a historical overview (every championship year, every driver), 1:43 is the only viable choice: the models are smaller, cheaper (€40 to €250) and require less space. A one-metre display cabinet can already hold an impressive F1 collection.
The best manufacturers per scale
- 1:18 classics: CMC (unrivalled detail), Exoto (extremely limited editions, high demand)
- 1:18 modern road cars: BBR, MR Models, AUTOart
- 1:43 F1 history: Spark (most complete), Minichamps
- 1:43 handmade: BBR, Looksmart (highest quality and value)
Which scale holds its value better?
Handmade 1:43 models from BBR and Looksmart appreciate in value more often and more strongly than comparable 1:18 models due to smaller production runs. CMC in 1:18 is the exception: sold-out CMC Ferraris achieve resale prices far above the original purchase price. For the average collector, 1:43 (BBR, Looksmart) is the most rewarding choice; for those who want one exceptional piece, a sold-out CMC or Exoto in 1:18 is hard to beat.
