Selling Formula 1 scale models: which are worth the most?
Formula 1 scale models form a world of their own within the collector market. The combination of iconic cars, legendary drivers and specific race season versions makes F1 models particularly suitable for collectors. But value varies enormously, from a few euros to hundreds of euros per model. Here you can read what determines the difference.
The driver largely determines the value
With Formula 1 models more than anywhere else: the driver sells the model. Models of the following drivers are structurally more valuable:
- Ayrton Senna: the most sought-after F1 driver among collectors worldwide
- Michael Schumacher: the Ferrari period (1996 to 2006) is the most popular
- Max Verstappen: strongly rising, especially the championship cars
- Niki Lauda: Ferrari and McLaren years are timelessly valuable
- Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart: classic 1960s drivers especially sought-after among connoisseurs
Which brands make the best F1 models?
- Minichamps: the most complete F1 range, value lies in the rare editions
- Spark: officially F1-licensed, broad modern range
- Exoto: vintage F1 cars in unparalleled detail, now rare
- BBR: handmade Ferrari F1 models in 1:43
- AUTOart: 1:18 F1 models of popular teams and drivers
Scale makes a big difference
A 1:18 F1 model of the same driver is generally two to three times more valuable than the 1:43 equivalent. The larger scale allows for more detail and has lower production numbers. In Formula 1: 1:18 is worth the most.
Championship cars vs. regular season versions
A model of the car with which a driver won the championship consistently fetches more than the same car from a different season. A Schumacher Ferrari F2004 (his final championship title) is more valuable than his Ferrari from 2005. This applies to all champions.
