BMW scale models: which manufacturers do it best?
BMW is one of the most collected car brands in the world of scale models. The range is broad: from classic E-types and M3s to modern M4 CSLs and i8s. But which manufacturer does the most justice to the brand? And which BMW models are the most valuable for collectors?
Minichamps: the widest BMW range
Minichamps has by far the largest assortment of BMW models, in 1:18 and 1:43. From the classic 2002 tii to the recent M4 Competition, virtually every iconic BMW model has been released by Minichamps. Quality is solid, prices are accessible (€40 to €120), and the collector market is large. Particularly valuable are the Minichamps M-series models in rare production colours and PMA editions.
AUTOart: the best BMW scale models in 1:18
AUTOart has produced the finest and most detailed BMW models in 1:18. Think of the BMW M3 E30, M3 E46, M5 E28 and the 323i: the AUTOart editions are considered the benchmark for BMW collectors. Many of these models are no longer in production, causing remaining examples to rise in value.
Kyosho: classic BMWs in top quality
Kyosho produced excellent 1:18 models of classic BMWs, in particular the M3 E30, M1 and 2002 turbo. These models are no longer in production, causing their market value to rise steadily. A Kyosho BMW M3 E30 in good condition with original box can now fetch €200 to €350.
Which BMW scale models are worth the most?
- BMW M3 E30 (Kyosho, 1:18): classic icon, growing demand among M enthusiasts
- BMW M3 E46 (AUTOart, 1:18): highly detailed edition, increasing demand
- BMW 507 (CMC, 1:18): rare classic roadster, CMC quality
- BMW M4 GTS (Minichamps, rare colour): limited production numbers
- BMW Art Cars (various manufacturers): Warhol, Lichtenstein and Calder versions are collector's items
