Maisto and Bburago: when are they actually worth something?

October 21, 2025 · · Modelcar.com

Maisto and Bburago are the most recognisable names in the affordable diecast scale model segment. You find them at petrol stations, supermarkets and toy shops for €10 to €30. Almost everyone has a few on a shelf. But are they actually worth anything? And when can a Maisto or Bburago model genuinely interest collectors?

The honest expectation

Most Maisto and Bburago models are and will remain mass-produced items. They are intended as affordable gifts or decorative pieces, not as collectibles. A standard Bburago Ferrari 1:18 from a supermarket will still be worth barely more than today in ten years' time. This is no surprise: editions are enormous and the quality is not distinctive enough to create a collector market.

When are they actually worth something?

There are exceptions where Maisto or Bburago does have some collector value:

  • Vintage Bburago from the 1980s and 1990s: early series models in original blister packaging, particularly Ferraris and Lamborghinis, are sought by nostalgic collectors
  • Bburago Gold Collection: the older premium line was better finished than the standard series and carries somewhat more value
  • Maisto exclusives for motor shows: models produced for a specific exhibition or dealer, identifiable by a special livery or sticker
  • Complete unplayed sets: a complete, unopened set in original packaging appeals to certain buyers
  • Rare colour variants: prototypes or test colours that never reached regular retail

Realistic values

A standard Maisto or Bburago 1:18 in good condition typically fetches €5 to €20 on the secondary market. Even popular models such as the Ferrari Enzo or Lamborghini Murciélago rarely exceed €25 to €40. Vintage Bburago from the 1980s in unopened blister can reach €30 to €80, but that is the exception.
